School catering proves popular in Hampshire
1 Nov 2011
More school officials in Hampshire may be thinking about bringing in cashless catering after it was revealed there has been an increase in the uptake of school dinners.
According to the Southern Daily Echo, more than one in three pupils now has a hot meal at school, the highest proportion ever.
With county catering service HC3S now providing for some 1.1 million primary schools, this marks an increase of nine per cent in school dinner uptake since last year.
Hampshire County Council leader Ken Thornber said that exciting meal choices and the fact that good, nutritious produce is used means parents are increasingly choosing to ditch packed lunches.
"At a price of £2 for a third consecutive year, our quality meals represent good value for money and this combination is gaining increasing support from families across Hampshire," he added.
This comes after the School Food Trust recently found that school dinners are a healthy choice, with 90 per cent containing at least one portion of fruit and veg.
