Academy schools 'should stick to healthy meals standards'
25 Nov 2011
The government should make it a legal requirement for the new academy schools to adhere to national standards for healthy meals.
This is according to Jamie Oliver, who has criticised education secretary Michael Gove for "eroding" legislation that he helped to bring in for state schools, BBC News reports.
Currently, academy schools do not have to follow rules which state that food given to children in school dinners must be healthy.
"The bit of work that we did which is law was a good bit of work for any government ... [Mr Gove's] view is we let schools do what they want," Oliver remarked.
Any school can now apply for academy status under rules brought in by the coalition.
Earlier this month, new advice published by the School Food Trust and seen by BBC News advised school catering providers against telling children to clear their plates, claiming it can be counterproductive.
