Customers 'are increasingly using NFC' to pay for goods
5 Dec 2011
Customers are increasingly using near field communication (NFC) technology to pay for goods and services with their mobile phones.
This is according to a new KPMG Consumer and Convergence Report, which found that almost a quarter of people worldwide are now ditching cash and cards in favour of swiping their mobile phones across an e-reader to complete a transaction.
However, this figure is much lower when only looking at the UK, where it falls to ten per cent.
KPMG suggests that it will rise sharply in the coming years, as lots of manufacturers are now including NFC chips in their handsets.
"This new 'converged lifestyle' will have huge implication for retailers," said KPMG's Tudor Aw.
One in five people said they now scan barcodes with their phone while out shopping.
Last month, a report from Forrester suggested that Britain will be largely a cashless society by the year 2016, with contactless smart card technology widespread in shops and other locations.
