E-money system proposed for Pennsylvania highway
8 Mar 2012

Drivers in Pennsylvania could soon be able to pay for a toll on one of the state's highways using e-money.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has announced that it is looking into the roll out of an All-Electronic Toll (AET) collection system on the highway.

The body has just completed a year-long study into the feasibility of the AET and found that it would improve efficiency.

Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission chief executive Roger Nutt said in a statement: "All-electronic tolling is a significant trend in our industry that a number of other agencies have implemented or are considering, and it is important that we thoroughly study such a possible conversion."

There is a cashless toll scheme currently in use on the turnpike, with around two-thirds of drivers who regularly drive on the highway using the E-ZPass system to pay for their toll.

However, should the AET system be introduced, the option to pay with cash would be completely eliminated.
