MSU adopts contactless NFC student cards
16 May 2012

All students at Missouri State University (MSU) are to be provided with new multi-purpose identification cards that incorporate near field communication (NFC) technology.

Blackboard Transact will provide the new contactless cards after the university decided to replace its old magnetic stripe identification cards.

The new ID cards will integrate a number of functions; allowing students to access door security systems and their library accounts, make contactless payments and act as their student identification.

Commenting on the new system, Kent Thomas, MSU's special assistant to the president, said: "It's our mission to provide a safe and secure campus, and with Blackboard we're truly future-proofing our system."

More than 25,000 students and staff will now be able to gain access to buildings and make purchases on campus with a wave or tap of their new BearPass ID smartcard.

However, the NFC smart readers provided by BlackBoard also support the old magnetic stripe technology.
