One in four to make NFC payments by 2017
31 May 2012
The mass adoption of near field communication technology to make mobile payments is not far away, according to new research.
A study by Juniper Research has predicted that by 2017, more than a quarter of all mobile users in the West will use their phones to make contactless payments using the technology.
This represents major growth, with around two per cent of users currently using their NFC-enabled smartphones to pay for things.
The researchers believe that paying for goods with a 'tap' or 'wave' or a phone has large consumer appeal and uptake will accelerate once more commercial services that utilise the technology are rolled out.
"NFC retail payments are still at an early stage, but hold great promise," explained report author Dr Windsor Holden.
"NFC is now impacting the public consciousness and we expect a rapid market expansion from 2012 onwards."
Juniper's findings came following a recent study by Gartner Inc which estimated that all forms of mobile payments will total $600 billion (£384.7 billion) by 2017.
