Qatar National Bank launches NFC payments scheme
19 Jun 2012

The global roll-out of near field communication contactless payment technologies is continuing, with the Qatar National Bank (QNB) the latest institution to offer it to customers.

Its new Tap and Pay system works like other contactless payment systems, using a smartphone enabled with either an NFC sim card or sticker to make transactions by touching their device to a point of sale reader.

Tap and Pay allows users to make contactless payments up to 100 Qatari riyals (£17.50) without the need to enter a pin or sign and QNB say that not only is it faster and more convenient but it also offers improved security.

"The mobile phone or sticker doesn’t even have to leave customer's hands during payments," the bank said in a statement.

"Each transaction uses state-of-the-art security that then generates a random verification code that cannot be counterfeited."

Having launched the service in Qatar, the bank is now offering customers who sign up to the service the opportunity to earn cash bonuses for activating their account.

Anyone who uses their card before July 10th will see their first transaction refunded, with cash credited to their account.
