Car park loyalty scheme to be introduced in Edinburgh's West End?
15 Feb 2012

A new car park loyalty scheme could be introduced in Edinburgh's West End to help traders in the local area.

The city council recently announced it is closing West Maitland Street for 18 months from the end of March due to tram works, the Edinburgh Evening News reports.

This will prevent traffic from accessing a stretch of road from Haymarket to Princes Street and enterprises are considering the introduction of a parking loyalty scheme to ensure people still come to the area.

Consumers will receive a refund on their parking fee if they make purchases from local businesses, while another idea could be to issue refunds through credits for the RingGo cashless parking scheme.

Grant McKeeman, who runs the Copymade shop in West Maitland Street, said his shop has been badly affected by the tram works.

"To date, we have had no compensation whatsoever," he added.

Earlier this month, a survey conducted by ICM Research revealed one-third of young people in the UK are not signed up to any kind of loyalty scheme.
