Starbucks to introduce contactless payment technology
30 Nov 2011

People buying coffee in Starbucks will soon be able to pay for their drinks using near field communication technology.

It has been announced that the chain will be bringing in facilities for customers to swipe their mobile phones to complete transactions via an app on January 5th 2012.

This should reduce queuing in busy branches at peak times and provide added convenience for busy individuals, as it requires only the simple reading of a barcode at the till.

"We're always thinking of new ways to add value to our customers and give them more reasons to choose Starbucks," said vice-president of marketing in the UK Brian Waring.

Marketing Week recently reported that Starbucks could soon be rolling out its My Rewards loyalty scheme in Britain after it proved successful in the US and Canada.

It offers stars for every pound spent via a reloadable contactless smart card, which can eventually be exchanged for tailored special offers and free drinks.
