Ken Livingstone backs transit card plans for Cambridge
8 Feb 2010
Former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone has backed plans for the future of bus travel in Cambridge, which could see the implementation of a contactless smart card system.
The politician met with members of the city's Labour Party to discuss public transport in the area, Cambridge News reports.
Daniel Zeichner, Labour's Parliamentary Spokesman for Cambridge, praised Mr Livingstone for the contribution that he made in terms of transforming bus services in the nation's capital city.
"[He introduced] the smart card Oyster system which slashed the time spent waiting to board buses. He kept fares low and oversaw a huge rise in bus usage," said Mr Zeichner.
The Spokesman went on to add that he hopes that a similar system can be implemented in Cambridge so that residents of the area can enjoy lower fares and the reduced waiting times that contactless smart card travel can offer.
In Bolton, Greater Manchester, people travelling on Arriva buses in the town are able to use swipe and go technology to pay for their travel thanks to a contactless smart card system from sQuid.
