Melbourne transit card to be introduced to improve tourist experience
10 May 2012

Tourists visiting Melbourne are set to have their experience enhanced with the introduction of a new transit card.

The city’s Transport Ticketing Authority has yet to determine when the myki card for visitors will be launched, The Age reported.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the smart card will cost between $12 and $14 per day and it could be linked with the city-airport SkyBus service.

Melbourne sees around 20 million visitors hit the streets every year so the transit card might also double up as an entrance card to some of its top attractions.

Chief executive of Destination Melbourne Chris Buckingham told the news provider: “For the first time in living memory we have a strategy for a dedicated visitors’ ticket.

“If a visitor has got the propensity to catch the SkyBus, he or she has got the propensity to catch public transport and the SkyBus takes everybody directly to the busiest railway station.”

The initiative for tourists forms part of a wider project to replace the city’s paper Metcard tickets with the myki card, due to come into effect at the end of year.
