Montreal transit cardholders to top up online from 2013
7 Mar 2012
Transit cardholders in Montreal could soon be able to top up their account online, according to reports.
The Montreal Gazette has revealed that the city's transport agency Societe de transport de Montreal (STM) is looking to offer users of the Opus card the chance to manage their account online by the end of 2013.
Gordon Teasdale, a director in the STM's finance department, told the news provider that a pilot project has been launched in order to test the viability of the online services.
As part of the trial, consumers insert their Opus cards into a small device connected to their computer via a USB port to add credit to their account at home using a bank card.
The introduction of online functionality would also allow Montreal residents to register their Opus cards. Currently, registration can only be carried out in-person at station offices.
STM has also announced that it will replace expired Opus cards, with the first batch of cards issued in April 2008 due to expire next month.
