Transit card system trialled in Kidderminster
8 Feb 2010

A contactless smart card system is currently being trialled on train services in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, according to reports.

The Shuttle states that the transit card, known as The Key, will be in the form of a season ticket that can be swiped at the station's exit barriers, totally eliminating the need for public transport users to purchase a paper ticket.

And the system has come in for praise from passenger representative group the Stourbridge User Line Group. Chairman Rob Hebron said: "The smartcard is the way forward for integrated public transport."

"We can make public transport even more attractive by providing more journey opportunities with one single payment."

It is hoped that the contactless smart card technology, which is also being trialled in Droitwich Spa, Worcester Foregate Street and Shrub Hill stations, will reduce queuing times for users of the service.

Providing the trial proves successful, the transit card system will be introduced across the network.

Similarly, people using Arriva buses in Bolton, Greater Manchester can now pay for their journeys using contactless smart card technology from ePayments provider sQuid.
