Transit cards to be used on West Yorkshire buses
17 Jan 2012
A new transit card scheme is set to be launched on West Yorkshire buses in March, it has been revealed.
Local transport operator Metro has announced that passengers on buses in Calderdale will soon be able to pay for their journey using a contactless smart card, reports Halifax Evening Courier.
Initially, smartcards will be issued to concessionary pass-holders before the scheme is rolled out to other bus users.
Dave Pearson, Metro's assistant director of transport coordination, compared the new cards to the popular Oyster Cards used in London.
"Hopefully this time next year we will be talking meaningfully about Oyster Cards in this area," he told the news provider.
Calderdale bus operator First will be the first to fit card readers on its buses in February, before rival firms Centrebus and T J Walsh install their own system on their fleets.
The smart cards have already been used throughout West Yorkshire, with bus operators Arriva and Transdev trialling the scheme in Wakefield and Dewsbury.
